WHY IS MY SURGEON REQUESTING NIOM?
NIOM is commonly used during many types of surgical procedures.  Your surgeon(s) may request that it be performed during your surgery for a variety of reasons.  The data we gather may be utilized by the surgical team for reasons such as; finding the optimum position for your body to be in during surgery, identifying and/or testing the functionality of particular neurological structures, or to insure that you achieve the best possible results from your surgery, to name a few.

HOW IS NIOM PERFORMED?
NIOM involves the use of computerized neurological testing.  The tests that we use are very similar to the tests that a neurologist would use in his/her office to diagnose a neurological problem, i.e. EMG, NCV, SSEP.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MY SURGERY?
Prior to your surgery, a member of our staff will introduce him/herself to you in the operating room holding area.  There, they will answer any questions you may have before asking you to sign a consent for our services.  He/she will then place electrodes on the surface of your skin over nerves and/or muscles that are to be monitored during the surgical procedure.  Usually, monitoring of the selected nerves/muscles begins shortly after you are anesthetized and data is collected virtually continuously throughout the duration of the surgery.  Your surgeon will incorporate the data we collect into his/her decision making process. Monitoring is concluded when we are dismissed by your surgeon, which is usually shortly before you “wake-up” from anesthesia.
